Monique Campbell's Story
Monique Campbell is an exemplary and outstanding individual who has performed at the top of her class throughout her academic life despite very challenging financial circumstances. She is the product of her own drive and a very supportive single-mother. Unfortunately, as a domestic helper (housekeeper/maid), her mother can only offer minimal financial support, and every year Monique faces the challenge of paying for her upcoming academic year. Unlike in the USA, full-scholarships for academically gift students like Monique are very limited in Jamaica. She relies on government student loans to cover her tuition expenses, and donations from family, friends and generous donors like you to cover her boarding, books & supplies, and living expenses (which amount to approximately JA$280,000 or US$5,000, annually). Monique received her high school education through fifth form at dèCarteret College (my alma marta) where she was successful in nine CXC subjects with six distinctions. She completed sixth form at Manchester High School with four Grade one passes (Mathematics, Biology, Physics and Caribbean Studies) and one Grade two pass (Chemistry) in the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE). She was accepted into Medical School at University of the West Indies in August 2003 and just recently concluded her third year of studies. She was elected Vice President of the class of first year medical students and is a committee member for SCOME (Standing Committee on Medical Education) and SCORA (Standing Committee on Reproduction- Health and Aids. She is also a member of the UCCF (University and Colleges Christian Foundation) and a member of the University Dance Group. She maintained an A average her first and second year, and an A/B average her third year (proof of grades available upon request). ### Monique Campbell Scholarship Fund: Thanks to donations from CK Jerk Shack (tips and a small percentage of sales) and caring individuals, I was happy to mail off a check today (8/25/06) for US$355.00 to assist Monique with her medical school expenses.
